Day 39, Mile 2762: Mexican camping and Salina Cruz Wind
20 January 2017
Salina Cruz, Mexico

Today was a fairly easy day. I didn’t plan to do much distance because my number one priority was getting a new rear tire and Salina Cruz seems like that last big city before Guatemala. After a little searching I ended up at a Honda dealer who was able to track down a suitable match.

I survived my first night camping in Mexico and was actually pretty comfortable in my hammock setup. I was concerned about the locals coming and disturbing me since I was kinda just in a wooded area outside a smaller village. Surprisingly, I had no problems and was a pretty peaceful night. I did have a kid on a horse come check me out last night and came by again this morning I guess to make sure I survived.
The whole time while I was waiting for my tire, I was watching the wind blow through all the trees so I decided to stay the night and check out the beach. To get to the beach, it’s a pretty cool drive because you end up going through a pretty large tunnel. The beach area was pretty sad though. Worn out restaurants littered the area and there was basically nothing else.

I attempted to reach the water with my bike but a heavy KLR loaded down does not do too well in the sand. And after all the effort to set my gear up and get all psyched about kiting, I determine that it was just too windy to solo launch/land my kite. Like insanely too windy. I think the only thing worse than not enough wind is too much wind to kiteboard.

I just roughly planned out my next week or so and it looks like I’ll be crossing the border in the next couple days. If I end up liking my next stop, I may stay for a little while but I really am 2 nights from crossing into Guatemala. Once over, I’m planning on staying on Lake Atitlan and the south coast to try my hand at a little kiteboarding. I’m pretty excited, the trip feels more real now that I’m crossing into a new country.

Best Part: Scoring tire
Worst Part: Digging my bike out of the sand for nothing.
Dude, you’re still in Mexico?! Stay safe man . . .
